FOOD PREP ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION                                                                                                                                                                   Job Summary: To provide SLO Natural Foods Co-op customers with high quality, safe and nutritious prepared food. Must have flexible schedule of 20-24 hours per week and able to work some weekend shifts.

Direct Supervisor:  Deli/Kitchen Coordinator

Status: Non-Exempt/Hourly                   


 I.                    Production & Customer Service

a.      Prepare fresh prepared food daily that exceeds our customers' expectations for quality and flavor.

b.      Use prep schedule and other instructions provided by Deli/Kitchen Coordinator to produce adequate quantities of food.

c.       Demonstrates ability to produce food of consistent quality and appearance.

d.      Meets productivity standards, striving to increase productivity.

e.      Works quickly, completing work in a timely manner.

f.        Follow department guidelines to record waste, production and cleaning.

g.      Ensure products are correctly labeled.

h.      Keep grab n go cooler, soup pots and coffee service stocked and attractive.

i.        Maintain deli display, prep and storage areas in clean, orderly condition, meeting health department standards.

j.        Ensure displays are stocked & rotated for freshness.

k.       Responds promptly and courteously to customer needs.

 II.                  Daily Physical Demands

a.      Standing for extended periods of time.

b.      Lift up to 50 lbs.

c.       Physical endurance regarding bending, reaching and repetitive motion.

d.      Position requires basic knife skills.

e.      Able to follow recipes for consistency in product.

 III.                Other tasks

a.      Observes safety procedures, using equipment and materials properly.

b.      Reports potentially unsafe conditions.

c.       Perform other tasks as assigned.


·         Relevant foodservice experience is preferred.

·         Must have current food handlers' license or able to get certification within 30 days of hire.

·         Ability to follow through on directions and commitments.

·         Must have the ability to prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks.

·         Must have strong communication skills.

·         Able to perform basic culinary math.

·         Able to memorize and follow protocols and procedures regarding food safety and health codes, food handling, inventory and stocking.

·         Flexible time schedule, evenings and weekends may be required to serve the needs of our customers and the SLO Natural Foods Co-op.

      General Requirements:

I.                    Customer Service

a.      Provide excellent customer service to our shoppers, making the customer’s needs your priority.

b.      Must be able to relate well to all people of the community regardless of color, national origin, religion, sex, pregnancy, age, marital status, veteran status, sexual orientation, disability, or socio-economic level.

c.       Must have working knowledge of product lines in order to assist customers properly.

d.      Take initiative to assist customers with product questions, in prompt, friendly, courteous manner, referring them to other staff when necessary. Offer suggestions for purchases and ways to use products, offering tastes and samples when appropriate. 

e.      Share information with our shoppers about Co-op happenings, educational opportunities, and the benefits of a Co-op membership.

f.        Report customer suggestions, comments, and complaints to Team Supervisor.

g.      Follow security procedures. Alert management of potential shoplifters, disorderly customers, and other emergencies.

 II.                  Internal Communication

a.      Provide excellent internal service to all staff members, maintaining an attitude of goodwill toward yourself and others. 

b.      Communicate openly and honestly with all others in the organization and be respectful at all times.

c.       Help create a work environment that is cooperative, fun, productive, and safe, that focuses on solutions instead of problems.

d.      Accept and offer feedback and suggestions openly and respectfully.

e.      Take initiative to identify, report, and resolve problems before they escalate.

f.        Resolve conflicts respectfully and in a timely manner, asking for assistance from supervisor as needed.

g.      Check mailboxes and/or e-mail at least once per shift, as required.
